Our little donkey farm - learn more about us
In 2012 our first donkey couple moved in with us. We wanted to bring a special pet to the farm for our children. These lovable and intelligent animals have crept into our hearts right away.
Donkeys used to be kept in almost every house along the Croatian coast and on the islands. The frugal animals were indispensable helpers to carry loads and people on impassable paths in the karst and barren landscape.
With industrialization and due to the abandonment of smaller towns and by moving to the bigger cities, as well as because of the abandonment of small farms, the number of donkeys decreased drastically over the years. Unfortunately, this meant that the three Croatian breeds were threatened with extinction.
In recent years this danger has been recognized and the preservation of the donkey is now being promoted through various programs of the EU and Croatia.
We are happy and proud that we are making a contribution to the protection and preservation of the Croatian donkey with our small farm.
Our donkey farm
Our donkey farm is a small family-run business in the Kvarner Bay. You can find us in Šmrika, 20 minutes by car from Rijeka and 5 minutes by car from the bridge to the island of Krk.
You and your family can do many great activities with our donkeys. You can simply book a spot for a farm visit, pet and feed on the farm and your youngest ones can do a few laps on the back of a donkey in the riding arena or on the other hand you can book an extended guided walk with the donkeys over the 17 hectares of pasture areas of the farm with a wonderful panoramic view of the bay and the islands.
Or you can take a long guided walk with the donkeys over the 17 hectares of pasture of the farm with a wonderful panoramic sea view of the bay and the islands.
Fun and joy are guaranteed.
A very special offer is a guided carriage ride in which the whole family or group can actively participate. One member guides the donkey, 2 adults or 1 adult with two smaller children enjoy the ride and a pilot operates the controls.
This is also very suitable for excursions with older family members, because the off-road carriage enables people with limited mobility to experience beautiful landscapes together, even away from the paths
